Welcome to the Global Issues page

Map of the WorldThe biggest issue facing us today is climate change due to global warming.

Trees of course take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere via photosynthesis and lock the carbon away in the form of sugars that they use to grow. But not all carbon is sequestered. Some of it released back into the atmosphere during the night while the leaves and bark respirate. During the autumn (fall) leaves fall from the tree and biodegrade, releasing carbon back into the atmosphere too.

Different trees grow at different rates, and even trees of the same species grow differently depending upon;

  • the age of the tree,
  • water,
  • sunlight,
  • temperature,
  • disease,
  • carbon dioxide, and
  • any combination of the above!

To help combat climate change, we should plant trees, lots of them, in fact, the more trees we plant the better. They are the natural way sequestering and storing carbon from the atmosphere.

More tree related ways of combating climate change...

Of course, using more energy efficient devices will also help, as will a number of other things.
